About me (mostly)

Hello! I’m Cristina!

I’m a Naarm-based human focused on doing the work, finding the fun, and trying to find the intersection of those two things wherever possible.

My comedy brain’s origins probably stretch as far back as my utter delight at receiving the Fawlty Towers DVD box set for my 11th birthday, while concurrently being irreparably moulded by Channel 10’s 6pm Simpsons timeslot.

Improv comedy entered my life from more slow-burning origins: from being a teenager marvelling at the genius of Thank God You’re Here (while refusing to take drama as a subject at school) to getting sucked into the world of Comedy Bang! Bang! in 2013, my love of the artform grew and grew until I eventually convinced myself that maybe I was capable of making the transition from observer to performer.

I started improv classes in March 2017 at The Improv Conspiracy Theatre, and as of 2023 I am a teacher, regular ensemble performer in flagship shows The Remix, Harold Night, and F#*k This, I Quit, and coach for a variety of indie teams. It sounds like a lot (and I guess it is!), but all of this is genuinely what I always look most forward to in my week. Teaching in particular has brought me a level of joy and fulfillment I genuinely never thought I would feel from anything I have ever been paid to do (and I was delighted to have these feelings furthermore validated upon winning Favourite Workshop Instructor 2022).

Improv is also the reason I got to perform in my first ever festivals (Melbourne Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival), with my indie team RHYMEZONE – an improvised hip-hop musical duo that was able to grow through repeated wins at The Improv Conspiracy’s Cage Match show (where we eventually broke and still hold the record for the all-time win streak with 15 consecutive wins).

And if it weren’t for all this, I would have never had the courage to finally give stand-up comedy a go! I participated in RAW 2022, continue to regularly perform in rooms around the city, and made my festival stand-up debut at Melbourne Fringe 2022 in the 4-star-reviewed split-bill Triplets!

In my proudest creative achievement to date, in 2023 I made my solo debut at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with my show Risky Spizzness!

Concurrently, I started helping out at Cornershop Comedy, a not-for-profit comedy theatre where I am now Treasurer and the producer of highly successful monthly shows, weekly jams, and ongoing workshops. With our profit-sharing model, we’ve been able to pay all our performers an average of $20 per show (often higher!), our workshop instructors a minimum 50% of their profits, and debuted a sold-out season in our first ever festival when we brought feature shows Thank God You’re Queer and Smatch Game to Midsumma 2024 and again in 2025. Additionally, we work to ensure our workshops are as accessible as possible, and are proud to offer scholarships and subsidies where possible.

The past few years since falling into the world of comedy have really given me a lot of perspective about what it is I enjoy doing the most in life, and where I can, I’m aiming to follow wherever that takes me. I say in my LinkedIn bio that “I like to think that my diverse range of skills, knowledge, and interests speaks to my nature of being a perpetually curious person, which works in harmony with my insistence that there is a solution for every problem. I get no greater satisfaction than knowing I have helped someone, and this is the energy I aim to bring to every endeavour I undertake in all areas of my life.” The fact that I’m reiterating it here as well means it’s not just bullshit I’ve made up to get a job - it is genuinely the philosophy by which I live my life.

With each day that passes I am growing more secure in who I am, what I want to get out of life, and what I want to bring to the world, so I can say unequivocally that taking the leap into the world of comedy, finally ignoring my hang-ups about not really “being a creative”, and when it comes down to it, signing up for improv classes, was the best decision I ever made.
